Local Events 2005 7th United Insurance & United Leasing GM Tournament 2005, Dhaka GM Surya Shekhar Ganguly of India has become the Champion in the 7th United Insurance & United Leasing Grandmasters Chess Tournament 2005 held from 4 to 14 April in Dhaka. 46 participants (25 foreign players) competed in this Swiss League tournament. Though GM Ganguly won the event, but the earnings of Bangladesh from this tournament was not the less. IM Reefat Bin Sattar has earned 3rd norm from this event and he is going to be the 3rd Bangladeshi player to become Grand Master. [PGN Games] Mercantile Bank 31st National Chess Championship, 2005 GM Ziaur Rahman has become the unbeaten champion in the Mercantile Bank 31st National Chess Championship held in Dhaka from 25th February to 11th March. In this edition, consisting of two segments, 14 players took part. Through the preliminary Swiss League tournament came out 9 players- Mehdi Hasan, FM Rezaul Haque, FM Abu Sufian Sakil, Hasan Imam, FM Kh. Aminul Islam, Aminul Islam Polash, Mahfuzur Rahman, Mainuddin Ahmed and Uten. In the final round robin-league tournament those 9 players joined 5 other players (joined directly)- GM Niaz Murshed, GM Ziaur Rahman, IM Rifath Bin Sattar, IM Abdullah Al-Rakib and IM Enamul Hossain Rajib. Reefat Bin Sattar Basic Bank 26th National Junior Chess Championship, 2005 In the 26th Basic Bank National Junior Chess Championship 2005 Mehdi Hassan Porag has become the champion. Over hundred players from 64 districts, Armed Forces and various Organizations took part in this open Swiss League tournament. Standard Chartered Bank School Chess, 2005 In the Standard Chartered Bank School Chess Championship Samima Akter Liza has become the champion. Over hundred junior players from various educational institutes took part in this open Swiss League tournament. Bangladesh's 3rd Grand Master Reefat Bin Sattar Reefat Bin Sattar is going to be the 3rd Grand Master of Bangladesh. He has earned his 3rd GM norm from United Insurance and United Leasing GM Tournament 2005. Reefat earned his 1st norm from White Plus GM Tournament in 2002. Then he earned his 2nd norm from the Leonine GM Tournament in 2003. Reefat has fulfilled the GM title main requirements. Only one this left to do is raising his rating to 2500. Reefat's current rating is 2473. His rating will rise to 2494 (21 points) after this tournament. So, Reefat will need to earn 6 more rating points from any tournament.
