Gata Kamsky Wins U.S. Chess Championship
With a draw in the final game against GM Yury Shulman, GM Gata Kamsky Wins U.S. Chess Championship 2010. He last won the title in his teenage years in 1991.
The Chess and Scholastic Center in St Louis hosted another fine event with $170,000 in prize money and introduced several new ideas to make the tournament more entertaining. The tournament patron Rex Sinquefield and his team continue to set new standards of excellence in tournament organisation and innovation. The game was broadcast live on the internet with streaming video and commentary from WGM Jennifer Shahade and GM Maurice Ashley. Kamsky took home $35,000.
The play off was required after Kamsky and Shulman both scored a win and two draws in the deciding four player all play all known as a 'Quad'. Shulman won a brilliant game against Nakamura while Kamsky rather fortuitously overcame Alexander Onischuk who turned down a draw and lost a complicated rook and pawn endgame.
